The New Zealand women's pursuit team has won a bitter-sweet bronze medal at the world track cycling champs in Copenhagen.

After failing to make the gold medal ride off Rushlee Buchanan, Lauren Ellis and Alison Shanks set a world record in beating the United States in the bronze medal race, bettering the previous mark by three tenths of a second.

The Feilding rider Jesse Sergent posted the fastest time in qualifying for men's pursuit but had to settle for silver in the gold medal ride off, which was won by defending world champion, American Taylor Phinney.

Sam Webster finished 6th in the Keiren final, which was won by the British great Sir Chris Hoy, who claimed his 10th word title.
