Robert Kubica has put Renault on top of the timesheets in the first practice session at the Australian Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne.

Kubica lapped the Albert Park street circuit, two tenths of a second faster than Mercedes's German driver Nico Rosberg.

World champion Jenson Button was third quickest but more than half a second off the pace in his McLaren.

Brazil's Felipe Massa, who finished second behind Ferrari team mate Fernando Alonso at the season-opener in Bahrain, was fourth ahead of Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel.

While Michael Schumacher, a four-time Melbourne winner was again upstaged by his younger team mate Rosberg, posting the 12th fastest lap over one and a half seconds off the pace.
