Burmester in form at National Swimming Champs

Commonwealth Games gold medallist Moss Burmester has topped the qualifiers in the opening morning of heats at the New Zealand Championships in Waitakere.

The champs double as the official Commonwealth Games Trials, where qualifying times for New Delhi must be set in the evening finals only.

Burmester clocked 1:59.73 to be less than two seconds outside the Games' qualifying time.

Meanwhile Melbourne Commonwealth Games medallist Lauren Boyle topped qualifiers in the women's 200 metre freestyle.

Boyle finished in 2:00.20 to head off Tash Hind, Penny Marshall and national record holder Melissa Ingram.

Boyle was only 3/10ths outside the qualifying time for the Commonwealth

Games.

In other events Olympians Hayley Palmer and Daniel Bell were fastest in heats of the 50 metre butterfly and 50 metre backstroke respectively,

while Rotorua's Kane Radford topped the men's 400 metre freestyle.

Christchurch's Zoe Baker was best in the 50 metre breaststroke heats.

In the only title decided this morning Alannah Jury won the women's 1500 metre freestyle from Taranaki's Charlotte Webby.
