Manchester United could be about to name Wayne Rooney in their squad for this week's Champions League second round tie against Bayern Munich.

The Daily Telegraph and Guardian newspapers are reporting that United have been so impressed by the England striker's progress over the weekend they're considering him for Thursday morning's match, a week after he sprained his ankle in the first leg game against Bayern.

But the club's medical staff rate Rooney only a 40 percent chance of playing, and manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said he would not risk his top striker if he was not 100 per cent fit.

United need to overturn a 2-1 first leg defeat on Thursday at Old Trafford.
