The former Warriors captain Steve Price is retire from rugby league at the end of this season, his 17th in the NRL.

Price hasn't played since last season after having two operations on a heel injury and there's been speculation about the 36-year-old front rower's future after Simon Mannering was made captain late last year.

The NRL's oldest player says while he's been thinking about retirement for some time he's still committed to getting back on the field as soon as possible.

Price, who also played for Australia and Queensland, played 313 matches for the Canterbury Bulldogs, who host the Warriors on Saturday night.

He and his family will be in Sydney, where the Bulldogs will celebrate his career before the Warriors do honours at their last home game in August.

Chief executive Wayne Scurrah says Price has made a huge contribution since he moved to Auckland five years ago.

He's played 91 games for the Warriors, whose coach Ivan Cleary says he's has been vital in helping to turn around the club after some tough times a few years ago.
