Steve Price to quit at end of season

4:19 pm on 6 April 2010

The Warriors prop and former captain Steve Price will retire from rugby league at the end of the NRL season, with his injury-plagued body to determine his availability for Queensland in the State of Origin series.

A chronic heel injury has kept Price off the field so far this season, his 17th in the NRL, and the 36-year-old, says it's the right time to announce his decision.

He won't be playing against his former club Canterbury on Saturday night but he and his family will be in Sydney where the Bulldogs are planning a celebration of his career with the Warriors doing the honours in August at their last home game.

Price says he thought he'd be a " blubbering mess" but it's a relief to announce a decision he says has nothing to do with losing the captaincy.

He says he still loves the game and wants to finish the season on the field.

Coach Ivan Cleary, who promoted Simon Mannering late last year, says Price willl be very hard to replace.

He's played 313 games in the NRL 15 Tests for Australia and 28 games for Queensland.
