Davis, the fifth seed, was beaten in straight sets by American qualifier Sachia Vickery in straight sets.

The match wasn't of the greatest quality with both players making far too many errors although Vickery was far better on her first serves.

Two other seeds have also fallen today.

Sixth seed Yulia Putintseva of Kasakhstan was beaten in straight sets by Belgian qualifier Ysaline Bonaventure and seventh seed Mona Barthel of Germany lost in straight sets to Varvara Lepchenko of the United States.

Third seed Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic bucked the trend with a three set victory over former French Open finalist Sara Errani of Italy.

Errani was given a wildcard enrty into the main draw.
