The New Zealand Olympic Committee has named a 12-strong swim team for this year's Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

It follows the week-long New Zealand Open Championships which doubled as the official Commonwealth Games trial.

The squad is headed by defending Commonwealth Games 200 metre butterfly champion Moss Burmester and includes eight members from the powerful North Shore club.

Swimming New Zealand successfully petitioned to have the squad extended from seven to twelve, after a re-evaluation of recent qualifying times around the world.

The General Manager of Performance and Pathways, Jan Cameron, says qualifying times have eased back from those originally set 12 months ago, since the governing body, FINA, brought in new suit regulations.
