Security hotline to continue despite hoax calls

New Zealand Cricket will continue with a security hotline despite a series of hoax calls.

Fan security was highlighted after a female spectator said she was groped and abused during the fifth one dayer between New Zealand and Pakistan at the Basin Reserve in Wellington earlier this month.

A 'text assistance line', like that offered at Eden Park and Westpac Stadium was setup for Sunday's T20 international at Mount Maunganui and New Zealand Cricket public affairs manager Richard Boock said it would operate at all Black Caps games.

Mr Boock said it received about 30 texts during Sunday's game - but 17 of them were hoax messages.

"We did have a lot of hoax calls, ranging from issues as disturbing as a suicide to sexual harassment and in following them up they were fictitious.

"So that was a bit disappointing, but in the wash up it was still a worthwhile aid to have in terms of spectator safety."

Mr Boock said the thinking previously was that the smaller boutique grounds did not need a security hotline but that view had now changed and despite the hoax calls the service will continue.

Spectators at venues can text 206 if they need assistance.
