The top qualifier for the one trick event, 20-year-old Garcia Knight put himself out of podium contention after he was unable to successfully land either of his first two attempts in Pyeongchang on Saturday.

With his medal hopes dashed, Garcia Knight didn't risk a big trick on his third and final run and eventually finished down in 11th in the 12-man field.

Canada's Sebastien Toutant won the gold medal, with American Kyle Mack collecting silver and bronze going to Great Britain's Billy Morgan.

The event is judged on the combined total of each rider's best two jumps.

The big air competition completes Garcia Knight's Olympic campaign, after he also managed a fifth-place effort in the slopestyle.

He said he was proud of his efforts at the Games, despite missing out on a medal.

"Really it just came down to snowboarding," he told Sky Sport.

"I had to challenge the conditions with speed and the light and I guess it just came down to how I rode.

"I'm not super exicted with how it all went, but I'm super proud of this Winter Olympics, it's been huge."

Garcia Knight's New Zealand team-mate Zoi Sadowski Synnott claimed a bronze medal in the women's big air event on Thursday.
