Snowboarder Zoi Sadowski-Synnott carried the flag and freestyle skier Nico Porteous led the team at the ceremony.
About 25 New Zealand athletes and officials marched in the ceremony.
Sadowski-Synnott, 16, carried the flag after ending the country's 26-year Winter Olympic medal drought.
Freestyle skier Nico Porteous led out New Zealand's team having won a bronze medal hours after Sadowski-Synnott.
IOC President Thomas Bach closed the games with a tribute to the athletes, and called on them to meet again in four years.
Norway finished top of the medal table, overtaking Germany by winning gold in the final event - the women's thirty kilometre cross country skiing.
New Zealand was 26th on the table with two bronze medals.
The closing ceremony was attended by the American President, Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka, as well as a delegation of North Koreans.
North Korea's delegation to the games was led by a controversial general, Kim Yong Chol.
