Jake Robertson has broken Rod Dixon's 35-year-old New Zealand marathon record in just his first competitive marathon.

Robertson completed the Lake Biwa Marathon in Japan in 2 hours 8 minutes 26 seconds - 33 seconds faster than Rod Dixon's time, which he set when he won the New York Marathon in 1983.

Robertson finished third in the race.

He will compete in the 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast next month.
