Both the men's and women's reigning champions have defended their titles, at the New Zealand Amateur matchplay golf champs in Hastings.

The men's champion, Matt Jager of Australia, beat Mt Maunganui teenager Brad Kendall, who won the national strokeplay title at the weekend.

Jager is the first male in more than three decades to win back-to-back New Zealand Amateur titles and is also the Australian Amateur champion.

The women's event required two extra play off holes but Aucklander Cecilia Cho, successfully defended her title on the 38th hole, beating Chihiro Ikeda, of the Phillipines.
