The New Zealand Olympic Committee Secretary General Barry Maister is to step down as head of the Olympic movement in New Zealand.

The hockey gold medallist will resign on December 31st after 10 years in one of the most influential positions in New Zealand sport.

The NZOC president Mike Stanley says Maister is widely respected nationally and internationally as an outstanding athlete and administrator and believes in the positive role sport plays in society.

He was elected a full IOC member in February and says his decision to step down from the NZOC will allow him to move into a more international role with the Olympic movement.
