He died in Christchurch Hospital this morning after a battle with cancer.

McCormick played 28 times for the All Blacks between 1965 and 1971, including 16 tests.

He debuted for his country against the Springboks at Eden Park in 1965 and his final test was against the British and Irish Lions in Dunedin in 1971.

He played for Canterbury a record 222 times between 1958 and 1975.

The former All Black player and coach Alex Wyllie said McCormick will be remembered for his love of a challenge, but he was also a very humble man.

Wyllie said he was a character both on and off the field, and made a strong mark on Canterbury rugby.
