Storm captain says they can keep squad

The Melbourne Storm'scaptain Cameron Smith says the disgraced rugby league club can retain its star players and remain within the NRL's $4.1 million salary cap.

But if they can't the Melbourne Rebels chairman Harold Mitchell hasn't ruled out the new Super Rugby franchise targetting the likes of Greg Inglis and Cooper Cronk - a former Australian Schoolboys rugby player.

In the meantime the Rebels have signed the All Blacks prop Greg Somerville and New Zealand Maori lock Hoani MacDonald.

Melbourne's been stripped of its titles and all points for this season as part of its unprecedented punishment for breaching the salary cap and there have been calls for the club to be at least allowed to play for points for the rest of the year.
