The Chiefs number eight and former All Black Sione Lauaki's off field troubles continue, after he crashed a car in the early hours of Saturday morning, south of Huntly.

Lauaki says he fell asleep while driving to Auckland after Friday night's Super 14 game, against the South African side the Cheetahs in Hamilton.

A statement from the Chiefs CEO Gary Dawson says no other vehicle was involved and alcohol wasn't a factor in the incident which has left Lauaki shaken.

He says ambulance staff treated Lauaki at the scene for a sore and swollen arm.

Last month Laukai appeared in court and pleaded guilty to an assault charge relating to an incident at a Hamilton bar.

He'll be sentenced early next month.

The New Zealand rugby union has also put him on a final warning in the wake of the assault.
