Giteau avoids suspension but cops fine over ref criticism

The ACT Brumbies first five Matt Giteau says he's happy to be playing this week after having to attend a judicial hearing following his criticism of referee Steve Walsh.

Giteau's comments about the Australian-based New Zealand referee saw Walsh removed from this weekend's Super 14 clash between the Brumbies and Queensland Reds, but it's also resulted in the Wallaby star being fined 5 thousand dollars.

In a teleconference last night Giteau pleaded guilty to a code of conduct breach and escaped suspension because of his impeccable disciplinary record with no previous offences from 86 Super rugby matches and 76 tests.

The Wallabies star has also offered to write a letter of apology to Walsh over published comments he made about the referee who disallowed a Brumbies try last week against the Waratahs.
