The Auckland golfer Richard Lee has posted the first ever sub-60 score in a professional event in New Zealand, shooting an 11-under par 59 at the Tauranga Open.

Lee made nine birdies and an eagle in his round at the Tauranga Golf Club.

His 12-under total wasn't enough to give him the lead though, with first round leader Andrew Green of Wellington following up his opening round eight-under par with a seven under par 63 in his second to remain the overall leader at 15-under par.

Green has a three-shot lead over Lee and Wellington amateur Nick Gillespie.
