A neck injury will sideline the Springboks hooker Bismarck du Plessis for three months.
The Sharks hooker will miss three Tests next month and possibly the Tri-Nations, but the Springboks have an obvious replacement in skipper John Smit.
Smit switched to tighthead prop last season with mixed results so Du Plessis could be accommodated in the starting line-up.
