The Australian rider Paul Tapner has won the Badminton horse trials in England after a thrilling showjumping finale which saw New Zealand's Caroline Powell move up to finish fifth overall.

Powell and Lenamore had been seventh after the cross country, which Tapner also won on his way to becoming the third Australian rider after Andrew Hoy and Lucinda Fredericks to win at Badminton in the past five years.

The best of the other New Zealanders was Andrew Nicholson, who moved from15th to 11th.

Joe Meyer stayed 17th and Mark Todd moved up four places to 18th.

The British star Mary King's hopes of becoming the oldest winner at Badminton were dashed when the 48-year-old had one fence down with Imperial Cavalier.

That dropped her from second to fourth, with Germany's Andreas Dibowski second and Britain's Daisy Berkeley third.
