England go through in the rain at Ireland's expense

England have qualified for the Super Eights stage at the Twenty20 World Cup on net run rates after their match with Ireland was abandoned due to rain in Guyana.

Following a similarly rain-affected encounter at Providence Stadium between New Zealand and Zimbabwe, won by the Black Caps under the Duckworth-Lewis system, England made 120 for 8 in their 20 completed overs, followed by Ireland's 14 for 1 in just the three and a half overs allowed before the weather closed in.

That wasn't enough for a match for a result, so the Irish miss out with their inferior run rate of -3.5, compared to England's -0.452.

England join West Indies in progressing from their group and, barring an upset in tomorrow's games, England will be in the same group as New Zealand, the champions Pakistan and South Africa.
