The New Zealand cyclist Julian Dean led out Garmin team-mate Tyler Farrar of the United States to win a sprint finish on day two of the Giro d'Italia.

Farrar crashed with 55 kilometres to go on the stage in the Netherlands, but with the assistance of Dean recovered to win the 209-kilometre stage.

Dean finished ninth, while fellow New Zealander Greg Henderson was 180th.

Australian Cadel Evans has taken over the lead of the tour.
