English FA chief forced to resign

On a dark day for English football, the FA chairman and head of England's bid committee for the 2018 World Cup finals David Triesman has been forced to resign from both positions.

Extracts of a secretly taped conversation between Triesman and a former female aide from his time as a government minister were published by the Mail on Sunday, including Triesman's suggestion that rival bidders for the 2018 Cup finals, Spain and Russia were planning to bribe referees at next month's World Cup finals.

Treisman said he was simply commenting on speculation circulating about conspiracies around the world, and those comments were never intended to be taken seriously.
