Dean grabs podium on Giro

5:48 am on 19 May 2010

The New Zealand cyclist Julian Dean set up his team's sprinter Tyler Farrar to win the 10th stage of the Giro d'Italia and grabbed a third place finish for his efforts.

Dean did the perfect job for his American Garmin team-mate to easily grab the win from Italian Fabio Sabatini.

Farrar says he has the strongest team in the world for leading him out and that Dean did something extraordinary in the leadout.

Farrar says he was going to let Dean win but he saw Sabatini who was coming behind him and he had to keep the win in the team.

It wasn't such good news for the other New Zealander on the tour, Greg Henderson, who crashed 15 km's from the finish and failed to make up the gap to be a part of the sprint..... he finished 14th.

Kazakhstan's Alexandre Vinokourov retained the overall leader's pink jersey, one minute and 12 seconds ahead of Australian Cadel Evans.

Tonight's 11th stage is at 262km the longest of this year's edition from Lucera to l'Aquila.
