Too much biff spoiling the finesse?

There's too much contact in the trans-Tasman netball competition for Southern Steel coach Robyn Broughton.

The Steel face the top New Zealand team, the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic, tonight in Invercargill in a must-win for the hosts.

A playoffs spot is no chance if the Steel lose and Broughton doesn't want the game spoiled by too much whistle.

She's unhappy with the number of fouls this season in a supposedly non-contact sport, which she claims is spoiling the spectacle.

Broughton says the physicality's taking away from the players' ball skills, which are often superb, and the umpires should crack down by sitting repeat offenders down for two goals, as the rules allow.

She's also had her players concentrate on doing the basics well, and not gifting the opposition ball which happened a lot in last weekend's games between the New Zealand sides.
