The Japanese tennis player Kimiko Date Krumm made a mockery of a 15-year age gap by stunning the former world number one and last year's runner-up, Russian Dinara Safina in three sets in the opening round at the French Open.
39 year old Date Krumm made French Open debut in 1989, when Safina was just three, and she's the seond oldest player behind Britain's Virginia Wade to win a main draw women's singles match in Paris since the game went professional.
The Japanese player prevailed despite losing the first set, and needing regular treatment on a calf miscle injury during the match.
Date Krumm had called it quits in 1996 before returning to the tour two years ago.
The four time mens champion in Paris Rafael Nadal was rarely stretched during his straight sets first round win over the French teenager Gianni Mina 6-2 6-2 6-2, extending his career record at Roland Garros to 32-1.
The mens 6th seed Andy Roddick needed five sets, including a fourth set tiebreaker to get past Finland's Jarko Nieminen.
