The mid-Canterbury cyclist Shane Archbold outsprinted the peloton to finish third in Saturday's sixth stage of The Ras cycle tour in Ireland.

Some excellent work from teammate MarcRyan put Archbold in the right position one kilometre from the finish to use his track strength and speed to chase after the two breakaway leaders and claim third place.

Both are part of the BikeNZ track squad who are racing in Europe as part of their endurance training towards the Commonwealth Games.

Ryan remains the best of the New Zealanders, in 21st place, four minutes and 48 seconds down on the leader, Sweden's Alexander Wetterhall.
