The Chiefs flanker Tanerau Latimer remains the understudy to All Black captain Richie McCaw and the selectors hope he impresses playing for the New Zealand Maori.
The All Black selectors didn't name another specialist opensider in their squad of 26 for next month's Tests against Ireland and Wales with Latimer instead turning out for the Maori side.
Forwards coach Steve Hansen says the decision was based on balance they wanted within the side,
Hansen says Latimer will get the opportunity to play for New Zealand Maori against the New Zealand Barbarians, Ireland and England.
