The British driver Mike Conway will be out of motor racing for at least three months, as he recovers from leg and back injuries suffered in yesterday's terrifying crash during the final lap of the Indianapolis 500.
Conway's had surgery to repair fractures to his left leg and is expected to have more surgery later this week.
The 26-year-old Briton also suffered a fractured vertebrae in his back and will need to wear a brace for three months, says the Indy Racing League's medical director Dr. Michael Olinger.
The crash occurred after Conway hit Ryan Hunter-Reay, which launched his car into a fence and disintegrated.
Conway was removed from his mangled cockpit, and airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital.
The race was won by fellow Briton Dario Franchitti.
