Folau confirms switch to AFL

The Australian rugby league star Israel Folau is switching to Aussie Rules, having signed a four year deal with new AFL club Greater Western Sydney.

GWS are due to join the AFL in 2012.

The 21-year-old Brisbane Broncos player, who's never played the game, will reportedly earn more than a $1 million a season, a large component of which will be for marketing.

But Folau denies money is behind the switch saying he's originally from Sydney's west and has a lot of family still there, which was a consideration in the move.

Folau says he spoke with former Brisbane Broncos teammate Karmichael Hunt, who has joined the new Gold Coast AFL club, before agreeing to the switch.

Folau's played eight rugby league Tests for Australia and six State of Origin games for Queensland.
