The CEO of the Wellington Phoenix football club, Tony Pignata, says his resignation has nothing to do with the financial situation of club owner Terry Serepisos.

A Wellington property company owned by Serepisos reportedly owed the Wellington City Council $2 million in overdue rates, which Serepisos last month said the majority of which has subesequently been paid.

Pignata's resignation comes after three years in the role, which he's held since the club's inception.

Pignata says his wife and children moved back to Melbourne six months ago and he's been commuting since but has had enough of doing that.

There've also been reports of players salaries being paid late but Pignata says the salaries of both players and the club's administrators are now up to date.

He says he'd never leave the club if it was in financial difficulty.
