The men's and women's defending champions and top seeds have both been beaten in the space of 24 hours at the French Open tennis tournament.

Following Roger Federer's loss to Robin Soderling, Serena Williams has been stunned by the seventh seed Samantha Stosur 6-2 6-7 8-6, earning the Australian a place in the semi-finals for the second straight year.

Stosur had to save a match point against her at 5-4 in the third set, battling back for a dramatic victory to set up a semi-final meeting with the fourth-seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic.

Rafael Nadal is through to the men's semis after beating his countryman Nicolas Almagro 7-6 7-6 6-4.
