Ferrari, the Formula One team of late Canadian great Gilles Villeneuve, have signed 11-year-old Montreal native Lance Stroll as the youngest member of their driver academy.

Ferrari, the oldest and most successful team in grand prix racing, set up the academy last year to help young drivers progress from karting through to Formula One.

The academy head Luca Baldisserri admits the Canadian is very young but says he has already shown in karting he is exceptionally talented.

Villeneuve, father of 1997 world champion Jacques, raced for Ferrari from 1977 until his death at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix.
