Roger Federer continued to fine tune his grasscourt game for Wimbledon with a 51-minute victory over Colombian Alejandro Falla earning the world number two a quarter-final place at the Halle Open in Germany.

The 16-times grand slam champion, who has won the Wimbledon warm-up event five times but skipped it last year, barely broke a sweat in the 6-1 6-2 victory.

Federer, who lost his world number one ranking to Rafael Nadal after being beaten in the quarter-finals of the French Open last week, next faces Philipp Kohlschreiber after the German knocked out Swiss Marco Chiudinelli 6-4 7-5.

French Open semi-finalist Juergen Melzer, seeded sixth, suffered a shock 3-6 7-6 7-6 defeat to young German Mischa Zverev.

The Former Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt went through after beating Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker 6-3 6-3.
