Argentina fire, Greece create history at World Cup

7:22 am on 19 June 2010

Argentina have lit up the World Cup with a sparkling win over South Korea, and Greece have made history by posting their first win at a World Cup.

Argentina answered the fans calls for more goals with a 4-1 win over South Korea, including a hattrick from Gonzalo Higuain, although their victory was orchestrated by the brilliance of the World Player of the Year Lionel Messi. And the score might have been that much higher but for the heroics of the Korean goalkeeper.

Nigeria had looked the likeliest winners before their match with Greece and went ahead in the 16th minute, but they lost 2-1 after playing most of the match with 10-men when Sani Kaita was sent off for a foolish foul in the 33rd minute.

Greece's first World Cup victory means Africa is in danger of losing most of its record six participants in the first World Cup on the continent before the second round, with only Ghana still looking strong.
