The British golfer Graeme McDowell held his nerve in difficult scoring conditions to end a 40-year title drought by Europeans at the U.S. Open with a one-shot victory at Pebble Beach in California.

The Northern Irishman began the final round three strokes behind his American playing partner Dustin Johnson, who made an awful start after setting the pace in round three.

McDowell moved three shots clear midway through the final round, finishing a three-over-par 74 for a level total of 284. one clear of Gregory Havret.

The Frenchman finished two ahead of Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, who faded to a 75 after yesterday's 66.
