Second round qualifiers could be decided by lot

7:50 am on 22 June 2010

There's an outside chance a team from New Zealand's group at the World Cup will advance to the knockout phase by being drawn out of a hat.

In fact the standings in six of the eight groups are so close a number of teams could finish level on points, goal difference and goals scored, as well as head-to-head match results.

A draw by lot, which is included in the World Cup regulations, has never been activated.

The last two matches in New Zealand's group will both kick off at 2am on Friday morning, to avoid any advantage.
