The French tennis number one Jo-Wilfried Tsonga gave French sports fans something to cheer about today as he moved through to the second round of Wimbledon with a 4 set victory over American qualifier Robert Kendrick.

On the day France's World Cup football campaign finally came to a merciful end, Tsonga produced an encouraging performance on a surface which he is yet to come to terms with.

The 25-year-old, 10th seed, says while he was sad about the state of France's football, he was happy to get through.

Tsonga is making only his third appearance at the All England club following his debut in 2007 when he reached the fourth round.

Tsonga, the beaten 2008 Australian Open finalist and semi-finalist this year, will play Ukranian Alexandr Dolgopolov in the second round.
