Nine drivers have been penalised five seconds by motor sport's governing body for violation of safety car rules during the European Grand Prix in Valencia.

Renault's Robert Kubica and Vitaly Petrov, Force India's Adrian Sutil and Vitantonio Liuzzi, the Williams drivers Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hulkenberg, McLaren's Jenson Button, Sebastien Buemi of Toro Rosso and Sauber's Pedro de la Rosa all incurred the penalty.

The stewards decided the nine had all failed to stay above the minimum time set by the FIA when the safety car was deployed after Red Bull's Mark Webber spectacular accident on lap nine.

Button, Barrichello, Kubica and Sutil retain their third, fourth, fifth and sixth places but Buemi drops to ninth, with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso up to eighth and Nico Rosberg of Mercedes to 10th.
