Germany crush England to make World Cup quarter-finals

6:30 am on 28 June 2010

Germany have crushed England 4-1 to make the World Cup quarter-finals after the most thrilling match of the tournament so far.

Germany led 2-1nil after 32 minutes through Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski, but Mathew Upson pulled one back in the 37th minute, and England seemed to have equalised just a minute later when a Frank Lampard shot hit the crossbar and clearly crossed the line -- but the goal wasn't awarded.

What might have been the most controversial incident of the tournament was neutralised by two brilliant breakway goals within three minutes, both finished off by Thomas Mueller.

Germany will play the winner of this morning's Argentina-Mexico match in Johannesburg.
