Injury rules Tsonga out of Davis Cup

6:48 am on 3 July 2010

The French No.1 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has withdrawn from next week's Davis Cup tennis quarter-final tie against defending champions Spain because of a knee injury.

Tsonga lost to Andy Murray in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon on Wednesday after which he complained of a left knee problem.

Following tests in Paris, Tsonga is now likely to be out of action for at least four weeks, ruling him out of the Davis Cup tie in Clermont-Ferrand and jeopardising his chances of being fit for the US Open at the end of August.

The only comfort for the French, who last won the Davis Cup in 2001, is that world No.1 Rafael Nadal has already said that he will not be available for Spain, winners for the last two years.

The match takes place from July 9 to 11.
