8:42 pm on 4 July 2010

The Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic will play the Adelaide Thunderbirds for the trans-tasman netball title next weekend, after upsetting the New South Wales Swifts 54-49 in their preliminary final.

The Swifts were unbeaten heading into the finals, but crashed out of the title race with two straight home losses.

The minor premiers enjoyed an early 6-2 lead in Newcastle, but the Magic took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Swifts to lead 29-20 at half-time.

The Magic dominated the rest of the match and were up by 11 in the final quarter, before a late Swifts comeback cut the deficit to five goals in the last three minutes.

The Magic shooter, Irene van Dyk, shot 44 of her 45 attempts to help push the New Zealand side into their second grand final in three years of competition.

The grand final will be played in Adelaide next Sunday.
