German media in raptures over Argentina thumping

7:13 am on 5 July 2010

German newspapers are predicting a World Cup triumph, and they've poured scorn on Diego Maradona as an "an over-the-hill gunfighter" after Argentina were ruthlessly dispatched 4-0 in the World Cup quarter-finals yesterday morning.

Yesterday's result followed the 4-1 scoreline against England, and sent the normally critical German media into raptures.

A former coach of Germany, Juergen Klinsmann, who led the team to third place in 2006 and is now a TV analyst, was full of praise for the team and his successor, Joachim Loew who he says has done an awesome job.

Loew says his team have been motivated by the mass support back home, which peaked at the weekend with more than 350-thousand watching giant screens in central Berlin.

The Uruguay-Netherland semi-final is at 6.30 on Wednesday morning, and Germany play Spain at 6.30 on Thursday morning.
