Drysdale retains title - men's pair crush the British

The New Zealand rowing crews bagged two wins at the Henley Royal Regatta overnight - courtesy of heavyweight world champions Mahe Drysdale and the men's pair of Eric Murray and Hamish Bond.

The men's eight and women's quad couldn't quite repeat their earlier performances and had to settle for the runner up spots.

In a stiff headwind four time world champion Drysdale showed that he is well on the road to recovery from injury, defeating Sweden's top sculler Lassi Karonen with some ease in tricky conditions.

Bond and Murray were expected to be pushed hard by the British number one boat of Andrew Triggs Hodge and Peter Reed, but the New Zealanders simply rowed away from their opposition.

Doubtless Bond and Murray's long style helped in the conditions but the margin of defeat - around 15 seconds - was a surprise.
