Stars caught up in Tour de France carnage

8:59 am on 5 July 2010

The reigning champion Alberto Contador has played down the seriousness of a leg injury after being caught up on one of the many spills which marred the first full stage on the Tour de France.

The stage from Rotterdam to Brussels featured a particularly chaotic final few kilometres, which saw a number of riders hit the tarmac including Contador and the Swiss Fabian Cancellara, while Lance Armstrong only narrowly escaped one of the crashes.

A number of riders have complained about members of the public getting too close to the peloton for comfort.

Despite his fall, Cancellara retains the overall lead.
