The new Canterbury and Crusaders signing Sonny Bill Williams' New Zealand rugby debut has been delayed with the former Bulldogs star sidelined for two to three weeks after undergoing minor knee surgery.

Williams was advised to undergo the procedure as a preventive measure and had the successful surgery in Brisbane on Thursday.

The Canterbury coach Rob Penney says Williams will miss the sides two pre-season matches and is likely to be unavailable for the first game of the ITM Cup.
