The Pakistan cricket team avenged their heart-breaking semi-final defeat in this year's Twenty20 World Cup to beat Australia by 23 runs in the first T20 international in England.

Umar Akmal's sparkling 64 from 31 balls lifted the Pakistanis to a competitive 167 for eight and excellent bowling from Mohammad Aamer and Umar Gul strangled Australia, who slumped to 144 all out in the 19th over.

The second and final match of the Twenty20 series takes place on Wednesday before the teams meet in two tests also in England.
