Cancellara regains Tour lead in dramatic third stage

6:35 am on 7 July 2010

The Swiss cyclist Fabian Cancellara has regained the race leader's yellow jersey after a dramatic third stage of the Tour de France, which left one of the top race contenders with a broken collarbone.

The stage was won by Norway's Thor Hushovd, and Cancellara finished sixth to gain an overall lead of 23 seconds.

But there was less welcome news for his Saxo Bank team, as Frank Schleck, crashed on one of the cobblestone sectors, forcing him out of the Tour with a broken collarbone.

Schleck was expected to be among the big challengers to reigning champion and race favourite Alberto Contador of Spain.

Contador and seven-time champion Lance Armstrong were left behind after the crash, which occurred when Cancellara forced a split on the peleton.

Armstrong then punctured a tyre and finally finished 32nd, leaving him two and a half minutes behind the overall lead in 18th.
