All Blacks start Tri Nations with bonus point win

5:06 am on 11 July 2010

The All Blacks have started rugby's Tri Nations championship with a decisive 32-12 win over the defending champions South Africa.

The Springboks won all three Tri Nations Tests last season but seldom looked like making it four wins in a row over the All Blacks, who scored four unanswered tries and led 20-3 at half-time.

The only time the Springkoks led was when first-five Morne Steyn kicked the first of his four penalties in the 13th minute.

But the momentum then moved the All Blacks' way when Bakkies Botha was sinbinned and the All Blacks scored their first try.

The big lock was lucky not to have been sent off for good early in the game when he head-butted a prone Jimmy Cowan after the All Black halfback obstructed him but match officials missed the incident.

Centre Conrad Smith then finished a great break from the fullback Mils Muliaina and second-five Ma'a Nonu scored on the other corner just before half-time.

The Springboks began the second half strongly and closed the gap to 11 points with two more penaltiies before the number eight Kieran Read crashed over to ensure the All Blacks extended their unbeaten run at Eden Park to 21 Tests.

Prop Tony Woodcock got the bonus point try in the last minute after the All Blacks had outmuscled the Springboks in the forwards and out-run them in the backs.

The second Test is in Wellington next Saturday.
